Can Volleyball Be Bigger Than Football
Volleyball is a very exciting sport, but does it have the power to overtake football as America’s favorite sport? Volleyball is a very popular sport in America but interest, outside of the olympics, peaks at the high school level. Football on the other hand maintains America’s interest upto the professional level. TV ratings for a monday night football game can easily beat most networks regular programming.
There are two versions of volleyball, conventional volleyball with 6 people per team on a court, and beach volleyball, usually played in pairs. Of the two beach volleyball is the more popular sport. High school volleyball however is very important for the community that the team comes from. There are several schools in Georgia with very strong volleyball roots, and in these communities it might be possible for volleyball to be bigger than football.
The south being the south, where football is king, it would be hard to imagine volleyball overtaking football as far as popularity. A good volleyball team will draw a good following of supportive fans, whereas a bad football team can have the same number of loyal fans even though they are not as good. So in my opinion football will remain king for the forseable future.
